Allow Spotify Through Windows Firewall
If the Windows Firewall blocks the Spotify app, it can prevent it from working and generate the error.
To allow the Spotify app through Windows Firewall:
- Open the Windows Security app.
- Select Firewall & network protection option from the Security at a glance screen.
- Click the Allow an app through firewall link in the lower left corner.
- Click the Change settings button.
- Select the Spotify Music option, tick both Private and Public options, and click OK.
Launch Spotify in Compatibility Mode
While rare, the Spotify app could be having compatibility issues and unable to launch correctly, so you can use compatibility mode to launch it.
To launch Spotify in compatibility mode on Windows 11:
- Press the Windows key and search for the Spotify app.
- Right-click and select Open file location from the context menu.
- Right-click the app and select Properties from the menu.
- Click the Compatibility tab at the top.
- Check the box in the Compatibility mode section, choose a previous version of Windows from the dropdown, and click Apply and OK.
Once you complete the compatibility steps, see if you can launch the app without the Spotify could not be started error.
Check Your VPN Settings
If you’re using a VPN, like Private Internet Access (PIA), it could cause an issue with your region and make Spotify generate the error code 17.
Make sure your VPN is working as expected and allowing traffic through—if it isn’t, disconnect or switch servers until the problem is fixed. You may need to stop using your VPN entirely to carry on listening to music if you can’t resolve the issue.
