Maintaining security on sites like Instagram is essential, starting with regularly ensuring your password security. Additional due diligence, like enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), should be considered to help protect your account.
However, if you suspect your password has been compromised, or if you’ve forgotten your password, you’ll need to reset it. It’s important to note that changing or resetting your Instagram password is completed through Meta’s settings menu, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
You can reset your Instagram password via the mobile app or by using the Instagram website by following the steps below.
How to Change Your Instagram Password on Mobile
You can change your Instagram password to log in when you forget it. This can be done from the mobile app or the website on the desktop.
To reset your Instagram password on mobile:
- Launch the Instagram app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
- Tap your profile icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Tap the menu button in the top-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings and privacy from the menu that appears.
- Next, tap the Accounts Center option from the menu.
- Under the Account settings section, tap the Password and security option.
- Choose the Change password option under the Login & recovery section at the top.
- Select the account you want to change the password for.
- Enter your current password, type the new password twice, and tap the Change password button to complete the process.
Once you follow the steps, you’ll need to enter the new password for your account the next time you log into Instagram.
How to Change Your Instagram Password on the Desktop
If your phone or tablet isn’t nearby, or if you prefer using Instagram on your desktop, you can change your password on the Instagram site.
To change your Instagram password from your web browser:
- Open a desktop browser and head to the Instagram website.
- Press the More menu button in the lower-left corner of the page.
- Select Settings from the menu that appears.
- Click the See more in Accounts Center link at the top of the left panel.
- When the Meta Accounts Center opens, select Password and security from the Account settings section on the left.
- Click the Change password option under the Login & recovery section on the right.
- Select the account to change the password.
- Enter your current password for the account, the new password twice, and click the Change password button at the bottom of the window.
Once you follow the steps, your password is changed, and you’ll need to enter it the next time you sign into Instagram.
How to Reset an Instagram Password
If you run into a situation where you can’t recall your Instagram password or your password manager didn’t save it, you can reset it. In this example, we’re showing the process to reset your password on mobile, but the process is similar on Instagram on the web.
To reset your Instagram password:
- Open the Instagram app on your mobile device.
- Tap the Forgot password link under the login fields on the login screen.
- Type in your Instagram username or the email address associated with your account and tap the Find account button.
- Choose the method of verification you want to use to receive your sign-in code.
- Confirm the code and tap the Continue button.
Instagram will walk you through getting to the new password screen. Once you’re there, make sure to set up a new secure password that you want to use moving forward.
Changing Your Instagram Password
