How to Mute Reposts on TikTok
If you’re getting annoyed with notifications every time someone reposts a video on TikTok, here’s how to mute reposts.
One of the features TikTok has added over the years is the repost option. This allows you and others to repost someone else’s video to your feed, but it can get spammy and annoying. If you’re constantly accidentally reposting someone else’s videos when you comment, or you’re tired of notifications when your friends repost videos, let me show you how to mute reposts on TikTok.
A Wee Bit of Repost History
When the feature first debuted, TikTok provided a way in your Privacy settings to prevent others from reposting your videos. In fact, if you search for how to mute reposts on TikTok, almost every hit is going to direct you to that privacy setting.
Let me save you some time. It isn’t there anymore. In the developers’ infinite wisdom, they pulled that setting, and we were left to find another way to disable this feature if we were annoyed by it. It’s much like our option to see who viewed our content — it was there, then it wasn’t.
So, we’re left with two ways to control reposts on TikTok. We can disable the notifications we get when others repost a video and control whether or not to repost other folks’ videos.
Please note this isn’t going to help you stop others from reposting your videos. The only way you can stop people from reposting your videos will be to make them private or delete the videos altogether.
Mute Notifications of Reposts on TikTok
If all you’re bothered by are the notifications that “so-and-so has reposted a video,” you’re in luck. That’s easy to turn off.
- Open the TikTok app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Tap the Profile icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Next, tap the three lines icon at the top right corner to get to Settings.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Next, tap Notifications.
- Finally, tap the toggle next to Reposts to stop getting notifications when people you follow repost a video.
- You may also want to disable Videos reposted from your friends if you find that just turning off Reposts doesn’t stop the notifications altogether.
Stop Yourself from Accidentally Reposting TikTok Videos
Next up, you may find that you’re reposting videos every time you comment on one. Let’s walk through how to stop that if you have the option.
- In the TikTok app, navigate to a video you don’t mind leaving a comment on.
- Tap the speech bubble icon to leave a comment.
- Just above the on-screen keyboard, you may see a Repost checkbox. If it’s there, tap on it to disable the feature and leave your comment.
Assuming you were able to uncheck that checkbox, it should be a persistent change. I say “if” because I once had this setting, but it’s since disappeared. Others seem to have it still.
If you decide you want to go back to reposting videos when you comment on them, re-enable the option in the comments. Assuming, that is, TikTok doesn’t disable the option for you.
So, How Do I Repost a Video I Want to Share?
Okay, I knew this question would come up. After all, some folks do want to repost their favorite creators’ videos. Even I do it from time to time.
- From the TikTok app, navigate to the video you want to repost.
- Tap the Sharing icon.
- If reposts are allowed, you’ll see a Repost icon in the middle row. It’s above such options as promoting, stitching, and the one that allows you to duet the video. Tap that, and you’ll repost the current video.
Controlling What You See on TikTok Is Far from Easy
Unfortunately, it can be a bit murky trying to figure out how to control what content you see on TikTok. Even worse, the video-sharing service seems to make changes without ever announcing or documenting them.
This means the option I once had to decide whether I automatically reposted content when commenting could come back at any time. It’s also possible it could stay gone forever.
