How to Use Microsoft Edge Workspaces
If you need to do online web collaborations and share tabs and web documents, you’ll want to use workspaces in Microsoft Edge. Here’s how.
The default browser on Windows 11, Microsoft Edge, continuously receives updates that include new features and abilities. The Microsoft Edge workspaces feature allows you to share a group of tabs with others.
The Edge workspaces feature allows online collaboration with others. For example, you can mirror open tabs in a session where anyone accessing that workspace can view and collaborate with you.
The workspaces instance doesn’t include personal settings or private data like passwords and browsing history. You can use it to generate a link to share with others and invite them to use Edge and share web pages and web documents. This guide explains how.
Getting Started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces
Edge workspaces mirror open tabs in a session where anyone with access to the link you generate can collaborate with you. Microsoft notes this isn’t a screen-sharing feature and doesn’t share data among other users.
However, each user does need to be logged in with their Microsoft account credentials and, of course, must use the Edge browser to access the workspace you create and share.
Note this feature is currently a public preview, and some features may not work as expected. But in our tests, we’ve had good luck with collaboration and web page sharing.
In addition, you must be running Edge version 111.0.1661.51 or above. To view your version of Edge or get an update, press Alt + F and select Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.
How to Create and Share a Workspace in Microsoft Edge
If you want to create and share your own workspace in Edge, you’ll need to make sure you’ve signed in with your Microsoft account first.
To create and share a workspace in Microsoft Edge:
- Launch Microsoft Edge and make sure you’re signed in.
- Navigate to the Edge workspaces preview site and click the Get started button.
Note: If you don’t see it, ensure Edge is up to date, and you’re signed in with your Microsoft account. - Select the Edge Workspaces tab that appears in the top left corner.
- Click the Create new button.
- Type in a name for the new workspace, select a color scheme, and press Done.
- A new instance of Edge will launch with a workspace with the name you entered in the top left corner.
- Click the workspace name you created and select the Invite to workspace option from the menu.
- A link to share your workspace will be generated.
- Click the Copy link button and close the menu.
- Share the link for the workspace with friends and colleagues you trust and begin your collaborations.
Any open tabs in the workspace instance of Edge will be viewable by those you invite. For example, you can share the link via email, text, or DMs on social media – ensure to DM so you don’t have the world in your workspace.
Once the other user(s) join the workspace, you can browse the same set of tabs and be in sync. Updates to tabs in the workspace occur in real time so everyone is on the same page. So when you favorite a tab, put it in the workspace section so everyone can see the same ones.
Again, your regular browser data will not be available to others. For example, it doesn’t share personal data like logins, cookies, and passwords.
Using Microsoft Edge
Microsoft is continuously adding new features to its Edge browser. The new Edge workspaces feature is just one of several new features that allow you to become more productive, allowing for instant, online collaboration with your team in real time.
There are several other features you might not be aware of in Edge. For example, if you need to share files, you can do it easily with Edge Drop, and if you want more screen real estate for web pages, learn to disable the Edge sidebar.
Also, if you don’t want to delete all cookies in your browser, you can clear cookies for a specific site. Or, if you’re going to share a web page on Edge, you can share web content from the browser. And if you need to solve complex math equations, you can use the Edge Math Solver tool.
